U.S. Troops and George Bush by John Severin
“It appears to me that Bush wants U.S. troops in Iraq until the last drop of crude oil has been sucked out of the ground.”
The premisses of this argument is that we should not keep our troops in Iraqi any longer. The author states that Bush has created an Iraqi meat grinder, that has ground up the lives of our soldiers.” Throughout the letter the author is attacking Bush for the decisions he has made regarding the war in Iraq. Furthermore the author is accusing him of staying in Iraqi just because of the oil that is in the ground. This writer wants Bush to talk to Syria and Iran so that they can come to an agreement that will result in a stable Iraq.
When reading this article it is immediately apparent that the author is attacking Bush, in other words using an abusive ad hominem, as part of the argument. However this does no lend any credibility to the argument. Because if the author wanted to make president Bush look bad then they should have clearly stated what has happened in the war so far, not just claim that Bush desires to kill all of our troops to get some crude oil. When one uses an abusive ad hominem it is very apparent to onlookers that there is an agenda that is being pushed. This is the direct case of this letter. In this case the author tried to make Bush look bad by saying that he is just keeping troops in Iraq to secure oil, however this fallacy puts no evidence forward that leads to this conclusion.
The author should not have made claims about what Bush has done without backing them up with facts that have resulted from this war. He should have given the stats on the amount of oil that we have pumped out of Iraq as well as the death counts, furthermore he should have expounded on the different policies that Bush has implemented that aid him in pumping out oil. If this was to be done, then the argument that Bush is only in this war for oil would be based in fact and not in an abusive ad hominem.
